The ServiceNow NextGeneration programme goes a step further by making the world work better for as many people as possible, opening the doors for everyone to participate in the digital economy. Uniquely, NextGen is designed to help participants into employment.
Hi! I’m Lyndsey and I work as a Consultant Analyst at Unifii’s Edinburgh Office. I’ve been with the company for eight months having joined in April 2022 after completing ServiceNow’s NextGen program.
How did you become interested in working in the tech industry?
I have always been interested in technology, but at first I just ended up following a different path. However, my last job led me to an interest in cyber security which I studied for a year. Ultimately, I decided that it wasn’t the right route for me, but I did enjoy many elements of the course - I knew it was just a case of finding my niche.
Is there anything in particular that drew you to ServiceNow?
The focus on providing value and simplifying processes. Technology is supposed to make our lives easier but on so many occasions it can do the opposite! I was drawn to the fact that within ServiceNow, there is a huge emphasis placed on improving interactions and providing a positive experience for the end user.
What was attractive to you about the NextGen scheme?
The NextGen program emphasises interest in a person’s potential and willingness to learn rather than previous experience in the industry. Without previous experience or an education in tech, it was proving almost impossible for me to make the career switch I wanted. To have an organization like ServiceNow provide opportunity for those who are interested but currently on a different path is fantastic. It’s a win-win, because people from different backgrounds are bringing certain skills with them that perhaps wouldn’t be developed from a career in tech alone.
Were you in a different industry previously?
I was in a very different industry before this and jumping into a role straight out of the NextGen program was pretty daunting. However, Unifii seemed to share the same outlook as ServiceNow and made it clear they weren’t only looking for work experience. When I was hired, the only ServiceNow experience I had was from the NextGen program! To have someone show that belief in you is an incredible motivator. There’s a lot to learn in the beginning, but I was never left feeling overwhelmed. Everyone made sure the pace was comfortable for me as someone new to the platform and there were regular check-ins to make sure I also felt like I was developing. Since starting my role only a few months ago, I’ve been blown away by how supportive everyone is. I think it’s played a big part in the progress I’ve made in such a short time.
What has been the most exciting project you've worked on so far?
I’m currently working on it! It’s a huge project and I’m learning loads every day. It’s a great feeling knowing you’re contributing to the overall project by completing your own bits of development work and I’ve really enjoyed working with a new group of people. It’s a while off yet but I can’t wait to see the finished result.
How do you see yourself growing within the next few years?
I think the biggest change will be the increased confidence that comes only from experience. I’ve made a lot of progress in eight months, but I am still learning something new every day. I recently obtained my Certified System Administrator (CSA) which felt like a big achievement, and I am very interested in gaining further certifications.
How would you describe Unifii in one word?
Nurturing.
