The Crown Jewels of your IT organisation: Visualising the Model
Updated: 25th Aug, 2022
In our first blog in this series, “The Crown Jewels of your IT organisation: the Value of the CMDB,” we highlighted the importance of the CMDB and the CSDM data: how it can serve your business by providing key data points to drive Service Management, Asset Management or Business Risk, to name but a few. We covered how the CMDB has evolved and expanded from the early days of IT Infrastructure Library good practice; it now embraces and bridges the divide between IT and the business itself, especially when overlaying the ServiceNow Common Service Data Model (CSDM). Hopefully, yourself and other stakeholders within your business now understand that the CMDB data should be treated as arguably the most important asset – a set of crown jewels to carefully maintain and polish.
Now, the task is to convince others of the CMDB’s significance and where it fits with your day-to-day activities. Let’s face it, though – this is a complex and challenging subject, and so it may not be easy to get people intrigued. For this reason, we have some pictures and analogies to help make the message as clear and enticing possible.
Earlier we suggested that the CMDB/CSDM structure now bridges the IT/Business divide to enable a symbiotic relationship, which can generate the image of a coin:
One face of the coin is IT and one face is the business, with the edge that connects them being the many data points they share to provide value. But the edge, where the two sides meet and exchange, is narrow and inflexible - hence it may be better to think of the structure as a tennis ball:
In this visualisation, your stakeholders can instantly see that although IT and Business Data may be held in two distinct areas, they both extend and provide value into the other hemisphere (hence the wavy, flowing line). With information from both halves stored over time and experience, your organisation will develop natural wisdom.
At Unifii we see the importance of a better, deeper unification of the IT and Business where data in context of the business leads to information that can drive better decision making.
Unifii have experience from many implementations: helping stakeholders to visualise their data, understand their process needs and build a solution that brings them wisdom. We have a range of experts to perform Health Checks and redesign or implement CMDB integrations, plus all the know-how that can get buy-in for your stakeholders.
